I really don’t know. I’ll be happy when we’re back to just talking about basketball and even attention seeking recruits that’s for sure.
Seems that we are walking a tightrope with one positive. Have to assume a second one would make things very difficult to work out.
Hey, Keels is deciding soon, right?
Amen. Need another Poca game to watch at 1.5 speed on Youtube while wondering how West Virginia high school teams ended up with names like “Nitro”.
Could it be a positive sign that local health officials authorized travel from Greensboro to Charlottesville? If they set the precedent that the team can switch locations for their quarantine as long as they remain isolated from anyone who hasn’t been exposed, maybe the same principle would apply to travel from Charlottesville to Indianapolis?
At least Carolina lost
Being at the game last night I realized I dislike FSU more than UNC … how things have changed. FSU just fouls incessantly.
Nitro is the name of the town the school is in. It’s outside Charleston. I assume the name has something to do with mining. The only reason I know about Nitro is that one of my best UVA friends grew up there. He didn’t go to the high school though. He was an All-State guard at Charleston Catholic. He was a helluva hooper—big time bucket getter. Not that you wanted to know any of that. But when I saw Isaac and the Dots played Nitro the other day, it got me thinking about my friend. Anyway, sorry for the digression and thanks for indulging me. Go Hoos (to the NCAAT preferably).
I found myself rooting for UNC. Couldn’t believe how physical that game was the last 5 minutes. I usually like FSU, but still UNC should have won - their free throw shooting was atrocious. UNC had like 10 more offensive rebounds and 8 less turnovers and still managed to lose. I would have liked for us to have had a second crack at both of them.
UNC is just a bad free throw shooting team. It’s the hidden weakness that subtracts from the effectiveness of their big guys. As a team, they shoot just 66% from the FT line, and the culprits are their big guys, who shoot a boat load of free throws and shoot them poorly. Bacot is the best at 65.6%. Brooks shoots 61.1%; Kessler 53.7% and Sharpe 50.5%. Collectively, those four guys have shot over 300 free throws - over half of UNC’s team total - to a collective percentage of 58.8%. Think of all the offensive rebound stick back attempts that must have been negated by missed free throws.
Kessler shooting in the 50s feels like that year when Jay shot 40 from three and sixty from the line
UNC plays a style that doesn’t value any individual possession. They’re all about volume, and if they make a stupid play, they’re coached to forget about it and keep running. But when a tight game comes down to important possessions, they are conditioned to be careless and make stupid decisions. I get frustrated watching teams like that.
Any bets on when we see a release today with our fate? I’ll say 430, leaked a little before I’d course.
I’m cautiously optimistic. Hope I don’t get my heart broken
If we get a tournament game I will only say positive things in the game thread for as long as we’re in. Unless Jamie Luckie is involved. Then I will say some terrible terrible things
I felt so dirty going all in for the Heels against VT Thursday night. Last night was a welcome respite.
Yeah, John Gasaway loves their style and hates ours because he values shot volume above all else. He loves teams that hit the offensive glass, generate steals, and shoot lots of free throws. If they don’t turn it over much, that’s even better. Obviously, our style has its weaknesses. They’ve been well documented, and all systems have them. But I would rather watch a team that plays like ours than one that plays like Carolina any day.
To be honest, I’d like to see us push the pace a little more. Every year we hear the coaches say that we need to generate some easier baskets with fast breaks, but it never seems to come to fruition. On the other hand, hard to argue with our success at the current pace.
Selectively push the ball. We have the personell to do it with K and R and Trey flyin around on the wing. Would also benefit Kody’s game though he seems to be buried after being out so long
