UVA Is Out of ACCT After Positive Covid Test

Yes, same one as NCAA is using. As I understand it, close contacts (within 6 feet for 15 minutes over a 24 hour period) will trigger mandatory quarantine, I think for 14 days. All comes down to contact tracing or a false positive I think.

Edit: it’s about the ACC tournament

A bit of an inconclusive update, but better than the alternative for now

I have a feeling even those in the program have no idea if this is possible or not until tomorrow’s round of testing and contact tracing is defined. The statement seems to be what should’ve come out in the meantime. The ACC Commissioner’s statement was garbage however.

Official release.

Virginia’s status for the NCAA Tournament is to be determined.

Tony Bennett, Dean and Markel Families Head Men’s Basketball Coach
“We went from an exhilarating game-winning shot to beat Syracuse to a gut punch regarding the positive COVID-19 test within our program. I’m hurting for our players, especially our seniors. I told our young men they have every reason to be disappointed, but it is still very important how they choose to respond. We are exhausting all options to participate in the NCAA Tournament.”

Carla Williams, Virginia Director of Athletics
“This is incredibly disappointing for our players. They have done what has been asked of them in very challenging circumstances. It is unfortunate the ACC Tournament has concluded for us, but we have turned our attention to the NCAA Tournament. We are in communication with the appropriate officials regarding our participation.”

Other fun part of this is that if we are able to field a squad, they’d probably not have been able to practice all week. Wonder what we’d even run if it was all the backups and green team. A zone, haha? Certainly couldn’t press with so few guys ready to play. And on offense, would have to simplify it way the hell down. Would be fascinating.

My worst fukng nightmare !

CBS Sports will not push back a week. It sends them into Masters weekend. Not going to happen. ACC could have ended season a week early to give teams a buffer before NCAAs.

Last off-the-wall thought for now: isn’t one of Reece’s teammates from his high school basketball team on our football team? Maybe we should see if he can suit up! And surely some other football guys played basketball back in the day.

You are referring to Jonathan Horton, 6-5/220 LB and athletic freak. Beekman & Horton led their high school team to a state championship. Horton is similar to Charles Snowden, with more experience as a basketball player in official competition than in football entering UVA.

There was definitely a team last year that had started working w/ a few of their football team to this effect… I can’t remember which team it was however. They recruited 3-players I believe. It was due to injuries and they needed the bodies for support for a possible NCAA run (obviously didn’t happen).

If it did not violate any NCAA rule about scholarships or something, I would one hundred percent be fine rolling out at least a couple guys from the football team if we got like a four seed and thought we wouldn’t literally set a record for loss margin in our game. UVA earned that spot in the tourney, and UVA athletes should be in that game.

Kyle, Dre and Ty still have a year of eligibility, right?

Don’t think it would violate any scholarship rules if it were football players. If a kid plays football and basketball they count towards the football scholarship allotment. I’m sure there are some other issues with it but it would be fine scholarship wise
