I’m pulling for Jay, but just going to note that the Mike Tobey path is a pretty solid one too. He seems really happy and has carved out a great career for himself.

I’d agree with you based on all the interviews I’ve read… seems like if the NBA doesn’t work out… he’ll pull chalks and become the youth pastor he always says he wants to become at some point.

His wife’s an artist…seems like she might have more opportunities in Italy or elsewhere in Europe than Charlottesville.

The Mike Tobey route has done a right by a lot of people. Is it the right move for Jay? I dunno. For anyone who’s spent large amounts of time living overseas they know it can be difficult at times. Im not sure if being married helps or hurts that either

I suspect that’s what he’ll end up doing. I mean, why not live with his wife in Europe for 2-3 years? Play hoops, make some money, and it’d be an interesting adventure. If they’re frugal they could sock away some money to make budgeting easier for many years to come.

Think it’ll be longer than that if Jay makes the Euroleague like I think he can. I suspect Jay will be making Tobey type of money living in a beautiful city.

Vecenie released his first post-lottery mock this morning (the link is above for anyone with a sub). Just like he promised, he’s got Trey going at 23 to the Rockets. That looks like a great landing spot to me. Obviously, there is a lot of time before the draft, and mocks don’t mean a whole lot, but it’s great to see Trey projected solidly in the first round.

I just don’t think Jay has that burning desire that will be needed for him to stick in the NBA. Think he has a lot of fun out there, but is not a killer instinct type of guy. And there’s nothing wrong with that

I’ve always wondered is basketball likes Jay more than Jay likes basketball. It’s easy for us to say “Well you’re 7 feet tall, you should be a basketball player” but if that isn’t his love or his calling, then he should do whatever is his calling.

100% agree. Always got that vibe from Jay. Hes 7ft tall he’s parents played and coached and he enjoys it but it stopped there and when he’s d9ne he’s done and moves on. Jaysin a great position where he doesn’t have to play basketto make a living or be happy
My wife did that played through college loved it growing up but once she played that last collegiate game was happy to hang up the shoes forever and do other things.

Yeah, from all the interviews I’ve seen with him over the years, I’ve always felt like he likes basketball, but he loves being a youth minister.
I think he could have a Tobey-like Euro career, and I think the experience of getting to live in a foreign city and make good money will be fun for Huff and his wife… for a while. Then after 2-3 years it’ll be like “This has been great, but I feel like there’s something else I should really be doing.” and that’ll be it. Which is fine with me. He’ll always be a Hoo of course, and I want for him what I want for every Hoo: happiness.

I really think people are overblowing this youth minister stuff. I’ve never seen Jay say anything that suggests it is nearly as strong of a passion as this thread is making it out to be. All I’ve heard him say it’s that it’s his plan for work after he is done with basketball. Somehow people turned that into his number one defining personality trait that is going to make him stop basketball early? Seems like a reach based off oversimplifying people we don’t know.
