Saw VT lost to UNC so I assume Hubert’s seat is safe for another day as we all know that VT is a tourney caliber team
…but honestly, how did anyone ever think that the hokies were an NCAA quality team. 2-6 in conference. Last year was a contrived win-loss record for them that gulled people into thinking they would good this year, and better yet for next year, they are not exactly restocking the cabinets with top flight recruits.
Tony seems to emphasize again that he’s currently operating as if this is Kihei’s last year
Reece had 11 assists and another 8 could have been assists - passes to wide open guys who missed. QB1
Not just NCAA quality but they had a lot of fans thinking they would win the ACC and make a deep tournament run. I’m too lazy to dig up an old post I made here but I specifically said they were super overrated by their fanbase and I love it when they put unrealistic expectations on their teams because it never ends well. There are ppl now saying MY is over his head and bringing up his Wofford record when just a few months ago they had the next Tony Bennett
Loved the officiating last night. We probably got away with a few fouls contesting shots but that style of officiating is definitely in our favor
I was on your bandwagon with several posters here arguing that VT was overrated going into this season based on a weird, very covid-impacted season last year where VT avoided playing 7 of their 9 hardest games and backed into a top 4 ACC finish. They did have good wins over Villanova and UVA, though, and returned a very senior/grad-laden team this year, which led me to believe VT would still be an NCAA tournament team. So I’ve been surprised by how poor their results have been so far, particularly in close games where you would expect their upperclassmen to pull them through.
They’ve got two really tough games coming up (Miami at home tomorrow, but 3rd game game in 5 days) and at FSU, so a 2 and 8 first half of the ACC season seems likely. The back half of their ACC schedule is considerably easier, but VT making the NCAA tournament definitely carries even higher odds than UVA. Particularly because an easier schedule means less chances for signature wins until the ACC tournament.
Tech doesn’t have any dynamic play makers or creators from the guard positions - that restricts them and lowers their ceiling against more athletic teams.
Which is exactly who they avoided last year
I definitely think VPI got a bit overrated last year because of their lower SOS due to various pauses, but they also had Radford for most of the season and Bede for the entire season. Neither are world beaters, but Bede has ACC level physicality and Radford is an ACC level athlete.
Pedulla is not there yet. Murphy will never be there. Most preseason predictions assumed Murphy could play at this level, but he really can’t.
Kinda our issue is the same in the back court with Clark and Statts and Franklin - very little wiggle and explosion in creating offense – Reece has made us a little now with his emergence last 12 games.

Lolololololol
We did it gang! High fives all around!
My enduring memory of Chris Mack, as he reflects on his team losing to BC in 2019…

Part of me is excited because I want UofL to be good and help the ACC, part of me is gonna miss crushing that guy
Louisville fans want Bruce Pearl or to bring pack Rick Pitino since the NCAA is powerless now. Louisville is a huge sports market and might be the only program in the acc outside Duke to have the financial power to compete with an SEC school for a coach.
I want to #flipkalebglenn
I don’t think Louisville understands which way the ACC-SEC coaching pipeline goes
Texted a major U of L donor I know yesterday and seemed to confirm this would be happening.
It’s a crazy fan base. They lost some major donors when the bball team participated in Breonna Taylor protests..
I’d have respected Mack more if he told the Louisville admin to pound sand when they told him to fire Gaudio and Murray. Instead he lost an apparently very good / very well regarded young assistant (so he’s got that going for him, which is nice) to UConn, and got his other long term friend into extortion hot water because Dino was (like the rest of us) worried about $$.
Instead, he caved, thinking he could at least save himself. Character revealing…
Where would do Louisville go with this? Belmont coach? Utah St coach, just to piss us off 2x per year?
Well if they want to piss off Kentucky they should give Mark Pope a call
