Johann is not NBA ready. Which is good because I certainly think he will be this time next year. Odom needs to pitch the ā€œstay and be a lottery pickā€ route HARD

He’s playing his way out of decent draft position. Lots of film now against very mid ACC bigs. See last two games.

Ok, watched the game and read every comment on this thread.

My main takeaway is that Donald Hand’s free throw technique is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen and I do not want him to be a Hoo. I can’t abide.

That is all.

Please continue.

Oh wow, just looked we were 4-23 from 3.

Also, just because, ND is 4-16 and Certa is 0-3 in so far

Malik made some big shots for us in the second half. Little jumper at base line at the buzzer was sweet. Also, a few of his ā€œforcedā€ shots at the rim just barely failed.

I was so surprised how tentative Lewis was after the big game vs ND. Looked like he missed his first two and then passed up several right after that, including a WAO one he could have taken one step back, scratched his butt if hewanted and then thrown it up.

At the risk of jinxing him, great to see De Ridder filling it up at the foul line. Nice day for Thomas there also. Glad they couldn’t do better.

And Jacari’s best outing in a while by far.

Our quality of play is inversely correlated to the number of podcasts that cite us as a sleeper final four team.

TDR’s free throw form is geared for a high %. Very little body movement and easy to repeat when tired since no leg involvement. Great news for us since he will be shooting quite a few down the stretch of this season.

No big advanced metrics but a few thoughts on some simple ones since the end of the 1st half of the UNC game:

  1. We are 16-64 from 3, a very cool 25% rate. Is this an aberration or are we not as good a 3-point shooting team as we thought we were?
  2. Compounding the bad shooting (which has made me want to gouge my eyes out), 3-point attempts have made up more than 45% of our shot attempts, while we are managing to hit nearly 60% of our two-point attempts, which boggles my mind since we seem to be awful at finishing at the rim. At some point, stop digging the hole deeper and find some more two-point attempts.
  3. Our opponents are hitting 37.5% of their 3-point attempts in this stretch, which seems absurdly low since my memory while watching says everyone of the MFers we’re playing is hitting like Steph Curry on a heater.
  4. Our defense seems to be coming back to earth as we are giving up two-pointers at a nearly 59% clip on top of the 37.5% on the threes - and the two point attempts are about 65% of the attempts against us. Bad defense or good, streaky shooting by our opponents - I’d argue ok defense on threes, just a hot hand by our opponents, but our two-point defense sucks right now.

Summary - we have a lot of work to do on both ends of the court. Sure, better three point shooting will cure some ills and we are bound to regress to the mean - but are we really sure that the mean is as high as we thought earlier? Not sure where the defensive improvement went, but Odom needs to get that straight or else problems and close games against inferior motivated opponents will persist and bite us in the butt. Good news - free throws are better - not stellar, but better and a reason for winning against ND (and BC’s FT shooing cost them dearly today).

Onwards and upwards.

Also Ugo is pretty damn good. It’s kind of silly at this point that he’s not starting but it doesn’t really matter I guess. You have to think some NBA team will give Ugo a shot. He could already add value right now plus there’s still some juice to squeeze in his game.

Hope you are right; he seems like a good guy.

I’ll take the 18 game sample that says we’re a really good 3 point shooting team over the 2.5 game sample.

It’s really a question of what sample you think is most relevant. Overall, amongst high majors (79 teams), here’s where we rank in 3pt% :

  • Overall (21 games) - #20 (35.9%)
  • Conference play (9 games) - #64 (31.5%)
  • Top-100 comp. (7 games) - #23 (35.0%)

It’s not really a clean story (e.g., good comp vs. bad comp). I’m sure a healthy Jacari would help. Maybe it’s a ā€œscouting report is outā€ thing. Maybe it’s just normal variation.

I’ll keep saying it..it’s not just a 2.5 game sample. Over conference play we have shot 32% from 3pt land. Good for 235th in the nation.

Will also agree though that we are better shooters than that stat. And this is an unlucky streak or slump.

My main point is that three point shooting will get back to the mean and we’ll start pounding teams again.

The story is our defense. Over last 3 games it’s 226th in efficiency and 82nd in efficiency overall. Offense is 30th (a drop of 6 places compared to the 3 games prior - not nothing but probably explained almost exclusively in the 3 point slump).

Our defense has cratered. It’s our worst 3 game stretch. And sure ND and UNC got on heaters but we are looking at a trend line now.

I think defenses have adjusted to what we want to do. Run us off the 3 line and be physical with our guards. Seems to work against us.

From my eyeball test, it seems that we’re missing open shots at a higher rate. If someone that’s better at pulling shot quality analytics can prove that….

To steal a phrase from one of the great philosophers of our time bad offense leads tu bad defense all the time unless you are Bennett
