It is hard to tell on text or Forum what people really mean ha. Everyone beyond happy we won etc. I think people jusf wondering if we see Eli anymore this year as lots of people have made the point that we should not.

As I have learned hangin out with all yall here we think about things like minutes and stats win lose or triple OT games.

P.S. Eli should play

What you can’t do, which I see being done here and there, is argue he shouldn’t have redshirted but then we shouldn’t have burned his shirt if he’s not going to get run deep in league play. This is what happens to freshmen.

Yeah … bad shots are no different than turnovers and can lead to run outs too… aren’t most Rohde threes same as turnovers?
Walk the ball up and then Putz around on offense for 17 seconds and then be forced to shoot a terrible shot is a waaaaay worse possession than actually putting pressure on the defense by pushing the pace or driving and creating.

Rohde has 2 rebounds or fewer in 11 of his 18 games played.

Mostly because that wasn’t a press… basically soft full court man to man… the one time they did trap - McKneely turned it over on the terrible held ball call.

Yup. I hated the redshirt. But also believe I acknowlede he wouldn’t play much come acc time. But that it was still not a redshirt situation cause he’s not going to be here 5 years regardless. Has a lot of growing to do, and was already behind with the ACL recovery.

He’s a higher ceiling version of Darius Thompson/Morsell in my eyes. I know you mentioned Reece as an example of someone like Gertrude being successful here and there are some similarities in their game; but Reece was always an elite point guard/visionary. Dude was averaging a triple double with Scotlandville/was the reason why their team was top 25 in the rankings for a few weeks.

In order for Gertrude to have that impact, him learning under Tony on how to see the floor and play not rushed will pay huge dividends. Will he be patient enough for that? I think so because just the way he talks in interviews shows how much of a character fit he is with Tony and his bench behavior body language is so very different from past transfer outs. However there are places out there that would let him see the floor immediately with his current skillset, even if they dont pitch or guarantee the bigger picture development/their approach is ā€œyou can ball out now and we can give you that opportunityā€. And he absolutely could deserve those minutes elsewhere because of how UVA under Tony values point guard play at it’s guard spots (outside a shooter like McKneely).

Yea @sdhoo99 I watched the end this morning. The Wave is right on this one they gave the token pressure then fall back. BUT to your point sd our guys, Reece!!, do look for Rohde in that situation to bring it up which is valuable

Another thing to watch is what pass guys make. Rohde gave it to Reece in a tough spot but Reece got it back to him and cleared out. Its like the assist turnover pass.

Edit: @sdhoo99 i responded to Dave but was kinda respnding with you as well

Edit2: also who passed it to iMac where it turned into a trap?

11-9 Tech when Rohde exited. -2 with him
22-13 Tech when he returned -7 without him
29-26 when he exited again +6 with him
7-0 Hoos run without him to end the half +7 without him
2nd half
22-16 to start the half. +6
3-2 with him out +1
He returns and Tech goes on a 15-6 run … yes McKneely hit that deep three on a terrible possession by Rohde -9

The bad version of our offense:

(I guess in ours the guys kinda run around each other in nice circles)

But last night we got the awesome version of our offense for the middle 20 minutes, and that was awesome, right?

  • Right!
  • I don’t really pay attention to how awesome our offense is as long as the secondary facilitation is on point

Reece has spent the majority of his time at uva playing off ball. Even now, when he has ā€œthe keys,ā€ my sense is he is a little less of a pure PG than was Ty, LP, etc., though he is clearly the primary facilitator/trigger man. But my original point was not so much that Eli could be the PG of the future, but that he could be in line to bring a lot of what Reece brings next year when Reece is gone (please give up on your fantasy of his return). Not the same as Reece. Similar, but different. Worse in some ways but potentially much better in others. I’m just saying I see a clear path to him being a huge impact player in our system.

Again, for the record, I am in the camp of folks that wants to see him play more, right now. I also think I understand why he isn’t.

Eli is a year behind everyone else. I would love to see him play more and no one is more excited than me (except Fresh) to see him play more. I’m convinced that by next year it will be hard to keep off the court. He still has a lot to learn but his individual defense and rebounding is awesome. Once he learns how to put that in a team concept he’s going to be fine. But I’m going to be pissed if i don’t get to see a Reece to Eli alley oop this year

Ha. For sure. Friend of mine once said ā€œyour eyes lie to you all the timeā€. Maybe thats why coaches watch so much film

I did watch the hi lights of that game and Isaac had a lot of confidence. I’m pointing out his confidence in his shot NOW, after changing it a bit last year.
