I’m still trying to figure out why Tony screwed up the minutes distribution in the 2019 madness.

I believe this is the very reason why he will stay.

Honest question, metrics aside. What is it about Taine’s game that makes you want him to play more?

I just feel like you’re the only one on here arguing for him to get more run and the rest of us prefer, if anything, he plays less. Eye test tells me personally that he’s a bad on ball defender and creates few opportunities on offense, but he can hit an open 3 if he has a lot of time to get his shot off.

Don’t feel like outside of the Louisville game I’ve ever come away thinking ā€œman, Taine was really good I wish Tony had stuck with him longer.ā€ I’d personally rather just see a little less Rohde to keep him fresh, more Bond, and sprinkle in Gertrude for development (when appropriate).

All of this is moot anyway because Tony is Tony, but I’m just curious outside of your advanced metrics, where the love for Taine comes from because he is quite underwhelming to me

  1. Taine +2.33
  2. Dunn +0.47
  3. Reece +0.39
  4. Bond +0.33
  5. iMac +0.27
  6. Rohde +0.26
  7. Minor +0.17

What more do you need? Taine is at 2.33 which shows he’s about 5 times better than our next best player. Numbers don’t lie

My opinion which does not mean much…

:+1: Taine has an enate sense of when to slash and when not to slash
:-1: Taine has a tough time staying in front of quick players on defense
:+1: When Taine is confident he does have a great 3-point shot
:-1: When Taine is nervous, his shot is terrible or he hesitates
:+1: Taine is a plus passer when he has the ball inside the arc
:-1: Taine does not get the ball very often inside the arc

Similar to my Jay Huff opinions from days of yore…

Jay Huff when the ball is above his waist:

Jay Huff with the ball below his waist or dribbling:

thumbs down GIF

… I haven’t watched much of Jay playing since he left college… so I wonder if he has improved on the below the waist play (not a double entendre @Serum114 or @WFS_HOO).

Huff was the g League defensive player of the year

So he is actually better without the ball! @jazznutUVA

Glad he doesn’t need the ball below his waist to defend!

Great list

Another thought : Taine is like a 5-tool guy (offensively) from baseball, but none of the tools developed to an ACC level. But he still has all 5 tools! The guys who are playing more than him have at least one tool that’s very good at the ACC level, but other than Reece, none of them are even multi-tool.

Also, he’s trying to be a do no harm, steady veteran, but that doesn’t work because he’s a negative defensively. He needs to score when he gets his cameo minutes (like he did against GT!)

Can we get Jay to come in and teach BB & Dunn how to shoot free throws at a high percentage as a big man?

Huff was always soft and looked like he would rather be doing anything but playing basketball. I’m 6 foot 170 pounds and probably could have bullied huff in the post

Fun fact: His 67.9% career FT percentage was less than Gill’s at 68.0% and Diakite’s at 72.0%.
