Also shot 84% his senior year when he was a focal point of the offense and led the ACC in PER and 80% in the pros.

There was a point when Dunn was actually stroking his FTs and looking good. First seven games of the season, he was shooting 72%, including 8-of-9 against Texas Southern. Clearly, it’s all mental now. He’s aiming instead of shooting. Like his three-pointers.

Best thing for it is to change something small that gets him out of the rut. Could be how his feet line up relative to the line, how many dribbles he takes, etc. Anything to break the old bad pattern that is now playing havoc with him. For golfers, just like switching out the putter or changing a grip. Might not be the final solution but it could get you out of the ditch and closer to your true capability.

He does line up especially wide. Right foot to the right of the pin even. But it is deeper than that at this point

@jazznutUVA i know you briefly and jokingly (I think) made it so that any mention of duke automatically showed up as :black_large_square: :black_large_square: :black_large_square: :black_large_square:.

I have a new request. Anytime a post contains more than, say, five numbers or even one “%” or “+/-“ or capitalized acronym or abbreviation, can you make it so that it simply won’t post? Don’t hide it, just keep it from even posting. The over abundance of stat nerd number posts lately are enough to make the sabre seem interesting by comparison.

I’m kidding of course.

Kinda.

Your posting PER went from 7.9 to -4.6 just from this one post. UMBC level performance.

Well, to be fair, hunter was out with an injury for that post.

Thought some might find this interesting. Others won’t. If you’re not sure which bucket you fall into, I suggest engaging in a voyage of self discovery before you read it, and then decide:

At 7:14 in the 1H, we were losing 24-14. With 10 minutes to go in the game, we were winning 58-45. So we scored 44 points in a little over 17 minutes. How’d we do it? Here are the relevant excerpts from the pbp, i.e., all of our offensive possessions:

Themes? Takeaways? I see lots of scoring off turnovers, lots of scoring quickly, and lots of fastbreak points. And lots of made threes!

He should shoot FTs with his eyes closed in practice. Visualise it. I am not kidding

I agree with your thesis that UVA’s offense would be better if the team hit more of its 3s.

I don’t have a thesis! I did this b/c Cuts tweeted that he was gonna look at our starters or something like that, which led me to believe that he wasn’t gonna do this, so I figured some might be interested in this – this being how’d we score so fast, and so efficiently in the middle half of the game? If I have time later, I’ll look at the run in the 2H.

EDIT - post above now has the full run – into and out of the half, in all its glory

If you look at Hoops Explorer for this time period it doesn’t show you any numbers. It just shows the word MOJO in 200 point comic sans font.

I forget if it was in this stretch, but there was a possession where they pushed early and got George stuck on Dunn in the post, and then something good happened.* Not that you can expect to get an advantage every time, but it’s a way to punish bad opponent floor balance on offense without the full commitment (and risk) of a more headlong transition push.

*I don’t remember exactly what

And during his entire collegiate career, Huff attempted a total of eight FTs more than Gill MADE in his fourth year alone.

Eh. Over the 19-5 run, we hit 4 of 6 3s while the other team scored 5 points in ~12 possessions. Everything was just clicking. As it does when a team goes on a run. I get that you’re asking why the run happened, but if that were answerable we’d win every game 98-34.

I disagree. The question is answerable. The word you are looking for is “repeatable.” I will never hit any shot in any college game, or coach a single minute of hoops (prolly at any level, tbh), but even I can answer the question!

Something I saw – we took 11 Threes in 17 minutes (way above our average), and 6 of those were off of turnovers or offensive rebounds.

Just to continue the “repeatable” theme – is that (trying to generate threes off of turnovers or ORs) repeatable? Not exactly. More experienced, better teams with better guards will take better care of the ball. We only got one three attempt off an OR, and that’s not something we are going to be able to repeat a lot. But are those things somewhat within our control? I’d argue yes.

They do something similar in archery to get people to focus on shot mechanics instead of worrying about hitting the bulls eye.

I’m sure there’s a sound teaching philosophy behind it, but blind archery sounds like a questionable decision.
