It’s not a coincidence because we played literally the worst defensive team in the country.
We scored 74 vs BC with Rohde.
Tonight had nothing to do with UVA, and everything to do with Miami being the worst Power 5 team we have played since the stalling Pitt teams. Glad the kids had fun though
Honestly, it helped not having Saunders in there more, with us going almost principally B/M. Playing two true bigs with the screen/re-screen and strong cutters flaring or curling off decent pindowns….
Much harder to run that offense with Saunders as the 4 unless he’s part of the two-man Sides action. But the spacing has been awful running that this year.
Murray, McKneely, Sharma, and Ames were really hustling off-ball tonight. And the “point guard” — as it were — did well being patient, waiting for the cuts off those screens.
(And Buchanan was outstanding on the offensive glass.)
That’s a good point. I just want to play more freely and I think he slows us down in general. Lots of perimeter passing and retreat dribbling. He’s a good player. But his instinct is to give up ground, not to attack. That’s all.
At the beginning of the first half I started to write a post about not being indifferent but actually sad about the current state of the program. Happy that we recognized the glory years while they were ongoing but now, just sad. I deleted it as we started to build a lead and found myself sweating out the game against a terrible Miami team. Damn you UVA basketball, I can’t quit you.
Miami looked like they’ve never defended a pin down/curl before. “You mean I gotta run all the way around that screen to follow my man?” Some of the worst pursuit angles you could possibly imagine.
Yeah I mean it’s not like we were reinventing the wheel out there or all of a sudden playing super free-flowing. This was the 6th slowest game we’ve played this season (partially because Miami also plays at a glacial pace) and we ran mover blocker for the vast majority of the game.
I said this at halftime too but our guys were running so wide open it legit felt like Miami was throwing the game on defense so the over could get hit. On that end at least they are the worst high major team I’ve seen in a long time.
Of Miami’s ACC opponents this year, we were the second-most efficient team they’ve played (in terms of points per shot). SMU was just lights out vs. them.
UVa 1.608 points per shot
Cal 1.556
Stanford 1.354
SMU 1.800
Duke 1.435
Wake 1.375
FSU 1.250
VPI 1.458
BC 1.393
Clemson 1.121
Maybe so. But I don’t remember all the retreating on previous teams. Could be wrong but I don’t remember Reece or Kihei or Ty or anyone else operating so far away from the basket. There is a time to pull it out and reset things. But it can’t be your instinct to retreat.
That’s all I am saying - it has be selective- not instinctual. And I know this is a different team with different players and a different coach.
I am just sick of the passive approach to offense and I think he feeds into that mindset and is comfortable doing it. Just my two cents.
Taine was awesome tonight, really happy for him. iMac was on a heater, I think most of Taine’s assists were to McKneely
Wanted to shout out Blake too though with 16 pts on 5-8, 9 boards (5 were offensive), 2 ast, 1 block. No turnovers and only one foul in 33 minutes. He was really good tonight
Miami’s defensive attention to detail in a nutshell (1:56 in the video):
They’ve executed a double team of TJ Power in a way that leaves him with the ability to step through towards the basket (??) and then send two help defenders into the same passing lane (??!) towards Dai Dai, leaving him with two wide open passing options. I guess the defenders were playing “inside the arc is lava” or something. The interim HC is losing his mind in the background of that play too.
About to post the same thing. I remember a couple but was shocked to see 7. I loved seeing him aggressive off the dribble. Sharma was the opposite of that. Would sure like to see him trying to score. Hit his free throws though.
