^^THIS^^ there is no redeeming quality about this team- there is nothing we do well. So glad I decided against the west coast trip to see these guys in the Bay Area.
I involuntarily shout âshortâ when Saunders pulls a 3 from the top. Iâm conditioned to it after 30 of them.
I never thought my opinion of Tony would change from the âcan do wrongâ type. He gave UVA a lot but it was a two way street. Can he really not suck it up for one season? He couldâve told the entire staff and the team before the season or even just announced it to the media that this was his last year. And it wouldâve been fine if we were still this bad. People wouldâve enjoy the last ride. He screwed Sanchez and everyone else in the program. For all the complaining Iâve seen from UVA fans about Bronco quitting, this was exponentially worse. Iâll get over it and go back to holding him on the highest regard but in hindsight it was about as selfish an act as one could perform in that position (assuming there isnât some sort of other reason for his departure).
Like many, I have all kinds of gripes about player usage and development, which is completely in Sanchezâ court no matter how late he was handed the reigns. But if heâs really taking an âIâm not going to play you because I didnât really want to recruit youâ attitude toward Bliss in favor of Rohde, well thatâs a choice. And the results are on the coach.
I can never hate Tony, and highly doubt I ever will unless he fuckin kills someone or something crazy (who knows how much the Tides Inn changed him).
But he shouldâve retired in the spring. I know it was an epiphany that came to him weeks before the season, or maybe he was just trying to make sure that Ron got a fair shot. But for the sake of the program, and for the sake of his own image I think the best solution wouldâve been calling it quits after the loss to CSU and letting us do a full coaching search. We probably land a guy like Byington and end up with a really positive outlook on our future going forward.
Rohde was ahead of Bliss either way. I guess thatâs why all these fans on social media are all upset about Bliss not playingâŚthey think he would play. He wouldnât. Even when TB was here, Bliss and ARob were the two guys out. And they were using Rohde at the point some. And Sanchez just isnât as much of a Bliss believer as Tony was.
You gotta remember back in the summer, Bliss was the guy everyone said was the most disappointing. Then he missed most of the fall again after foot surgery, then had another setback. He was way behind entering the season. I donât like the whole deal either on principle but I totally get it from his point of view. He is hampered by an injury even heâs recovered at this point.
If he retired in the Spring it wouldâve screwed over the program too. We almost certainly would have to give Ron a chance and he just ainât it. Weâd have to go through 2 or 3 more years of this. Recruiting would be awful with this watered down version of TBs system. That couldâve set the program back years. Yeah, maybe this year wouldâve been a bit better, but youâre still likely talking just sneaking in the tourney at best.
I know it hurts now and it definitely sucks for some of these kids, but they are making good money now, theyâll get over it.
Good explanation and makes sense. Seems like everyone was so high on him, hard to reconcile with what he actually is at this point. Hopefully he finds a place where his skill set can thrive.
i will keep watching just not on wednesday @cal @11pm absolutely not
The condensed game on YouTube will be your friend the rest of the season.
Nah. I will watch. Go Hoos!
ARob is playing. Bliss is not. Buchanan started ahead of Cofie but now is not. People can understand delay to injury and can understand limited PT in a developmental role. PT for guys like Cofie, Sharma, ARob, and Bliss show promise for the future and give some hopeful prospects for a coach who is trying to convince the masses that the program will be in good hands.
When we watch Rohde get beat repeatedly as though heâs wearing concrete shoes and the coach sticks by that guy, it takes away hope for the future. Bliss and Rohde may not be a 1-1 comparison, but theyâre on the same guard committee.
And we continue to see slow to zero development out of a lot of players and really no unique scheming to suggest we have a savvy X and Oâs coach working with inferior talent. This continues to be a slow (or maybe not so slow) decline into a lower-half status in an increasingly inferior conference. Sanchez just isnât the guy to turn this around, and his apparent unwillingness to call all hands on deck (Bliss) is frustrating. No one is saying Bliss is a savior, but embrace the young guy and give him some run.
YeahâŚto me thatâs been the biggest red flag with Sanchez. The first job was to keep the team together. He lost Warley, essentially lost Bliss. People want to give a pass, as if that was all guaranteed when Bennett left. But neither happened immediatelyâŚyou had a chance to keep them.
Personally, I donât like the starting lineup changes eitherâŚbecause it increases risk of losing guys. I donât mean to transfer after the season, thatâs happening anyway, but you risk them mentally checking out.
I accept no Rohde slander. Does he have physical limitations, sure. But the guy has done EVERYTHING the staff has asked. Further I donât understand people on this board (or elsewhere) making fun of the guy. He plays. Every game. Forget Bliss. He quit. Stop asking about him.
Itâs not a question of his will or character or anything like that. The walk-ons have done everything asked of them too. I suppose you could wonder if Rohde has been asked to stay in front of his man defensivelyâŚ
I think itâs already happening with Ames and Buchanan - but Iâm not torn up about either. He should have realized you canât run three man with either of those guys that effectively, though, and known to go to different offenses if he was going to play them.
Also, am I crazy or was Rohde like the only guy who could slow Hepburn down. I havenât rewatched yet.
Ainât a guy on this team who can stay in front of his man. I donât expect more of someone than they can give. Somebodyâs got to play.
The move he put on Rohde at the 14:46 mark of the first half made me laugh out loud. The announcer said âthatâs just silly.â Hepburn is pretty quick, but Rohde looked like Bert the cop trying to wrestle down Clarence the Guardian Angel.
Did you see Ames try to guard him? Or anyone else for that matter. Hepburn had a slow start to the game primarily because of Rohde.
I could think of a laundry list of things to complain about that game (and surely will). Rohde would be very far down that list.
If youâre gonna criticize Rohde for his defense, at least be consistent. Criticize Ames for his similar struggles in guarding Hepburn. Or Cofie for getting beat on backcuts multiple times. Or Saunders for only grabbing one rebound in 30 minutes played.
This loss was a team effort, I donât see the logic behind singling out one player especially when he was our leading scorer.
