I posted him in my list, but I’m also warming up to the idea of Al Golden. I know that name is gonna get “Fuck no” reactions from some people, but I genuinely believe he’d be a good fit here.
He’s done a hell of a job as ND’s DC, from both a recruiting and X’s and O’s perspective. He has HC experience, rebuilt Temple from the ground up and then had inconsistent results at Miami during a time period where their administration was a chaotic disaster. He’s a former coach here and understands our culture and what it would take to win within our boundaries.
He’s got warts and would need to hire a really good up and coming OC in order for it to work well, but at this point why not.
I know the topic has moved away from today’s game, but I hope y’all will indulge me as I get something off my chest. I’ve attended hundreds of UVA football games over more than four decades. Given the stakes, the relative quality of the opponent, the signifcance of the opponent, and the performance/outcome, I’m pretty sure I just sat through the worst UVA football game I’ve ever been to. It’s difficult to find the words to express my disgust at what I witnessed today. Just an abject failure at every level of the organization. Rant over. We now resume your regularly scheduled programming.
I said before today that this was a must win, and anything less would have a chance to completely derail the season.
The latter of that sentence looks pretty damn likely right about now. Just don’t know where we go from here outside of losing out with our gauntlet of a schedule remaining.
Hard no on Rahne. Never been above .500 to finish a season, and for a guy whose background is entirely on the offensive side of the ball he’s produced some abysmal offenses during his time at ODU.
I watched none of the game but am obviously catching up. One of the most concerning things to me is how the program has repeatedly fallen flat in the big moment. The VT game last year, the first home game last yr agaisnt JMU. UNC and MD this year. The inability to rise to the moment is killer. It kills moral it kills enthusiasm and for that I place the blame on the staff. At some point you have to answer the bell and consistently this group has not.
I will say the quarterback spot in particular has been a pretty glaring issue with him at ODU. They got a kid in Colton Joseph now who might be quite good though and since they put him in as starter they’ve won 4 of their last 5. They could easily finish 8-4 or 4-8 this year.
No. I don’t want another first time HC combined with a first time OC. Next coach needs to be someone with actual HC experience and I would assume that’s the direction Carla will go.
I get that those two more than anyone would understand our culture, but honestly we might be better off trying to land someone who doesn’t really understand it and can maybe change the culture around our football program. I’ve seen people in the past turn their noses up at quality coaching candidates because “they don’t fit the culture here” and all that says to me is that’s a problem with us and not them lol.
Agree love both of those guys but they are not ready for this job. Has either even made it to coordinator at the P4 level? Want Poindexter passed over for that?
Dex has been co-DC for the past couple of years, but has shared that now with three different coaches (Pry, Diaz, Allen). Don’t think he’s the guy calling plays.
I just don’t think it’s a risk you take in the wake of your last coach being a first time HC and him not really working out.
Is there something about the Liberty coach (Chadwell) that would be a disquaifier? He’s not old, has won wherever he’s been, exciting offense, and short relocation.
