Itâs not very clear how much the committee is weighting efficiency vs resume yet. I donât remember there being any particular good tests of it with last yearâs bubble.
More for seeding I think for sure
This is going to be a really fun season. Glad we played those scrimmages and equally glad we have a series of tuneup games before paying Northwestern and Butler. Should be cooking by the time we get to the meat of our schedule.
Resume metrics for selection, efficiency metrics for seeding, human committee members golfing for the weekend while Bruce the IT Guy hits the ârun modelsâ button on Selection Sunday is my preferred approach.
Any player observations? Nothing stood out to me except maybe that Lewis looked more comfortable. He seems to have the all the tools so hopefully he keeps getting more involved. Otherwise it was such a mismatch that it was hard to pick anything out
Mallory obviously impressed, as did De Ridder. Weâre gonna need Chanceâs ability to break defenses down off the dribble this season and I do think that lends some credence to the argument that heâll eventually be starting over Hall. Dallin played fine but his inconsistent shot from 3 and being slower footed in general than Chance definitely stands out when you watch both of them play. If he ends up being a worse defender than Chance despite his size advantage that kinda takes away the one potential tiebreaker he has.
De Ridder isnât gonna see weak frontcourts like that every night out but goddamn he looked like a man playing against boys tonight. Got everything he wanted in the paint, dominated on the boards, and even hit a 3. Probably could have had 30-35 if we fed him the ball more, but he played really well within the offense. Was actually surprised how many times we dumped it into the post for offense, I donât expect that to be a major point of emphasis for us but who knows with how good De Ridder/GrĂźnloh/Onyenso looked tonight in the paint maybe it will be.
Odom says Tillis had surgery on his knee but implied he will be back at some point this year
âWeâre not sure exactly how long, but it was the best path for us/ for him to be able to have a season here with us.â
Was really happy with the only 6 turnovers (5 not including Robertâs). That was a big problem in the scrimmages so nice to see that better even against inferior comp
Letâs see:
Mallory is so much fun to watch. He has a lot of Kihei in him on defense and is considerably better offensively. Apparently has tremendous endurance.
Coach Odom gives a hell of a halftime talk.
DeRidder looked excellent. He mustâve been sick against Villanova (ok, Villanova-Rider is apples-oranges.)
Really happy to see Lewis show some stuff. Certainly didnât appear one-dimensional as I imagined.
That really sucks. With how GrĂźnloh and De Ridder have been fouling thatâs concerning. Could see a lot of Lewis at the 4.
Also, has it been announced that Barksdale is redshirting?
Great to get the surgery done when he did though. We shouldnât need him for a while given our schedule
I wonder if Lang can play any 4? I suspect mobility might be an issue
Honestly I am a little surprised Carrere is getting the PT over Barksdale. I know he can stretch the floor but he looked 2-3 years away defensively.
Carrere already redshirted, right? So⌠if weâre redshirting Barksdale it makes sense. (And I expect Carrere wonât be getting non-garbage-time PT once conf play begins.)
Yeah I get that but I was kinda hoping Barksdale wouldnât be redshirted lol.
Probably to preserve Barksdaleâs redshirt, whereas Carrereâs is already burned. Barksdale may yet play given the Tillis injury, but if thereâs any uncertainty, have to keep him seated. We start with four buy games, so if Silas does need to work in, there are games left to get him run before we start with power conference competition
T-Rank clocks it as a 64 possession game:
Felt a little faster than that. 1.36 PPP on offense, 0.83 PPP on defense.
53% OReb rate.
DeRidder is a funny dude. Great radio interview with Freeman and Jimmy Miller.
Tonight, 7 players moved past Austin Nichols in the âtotal minutes played for UVAâ record book
