You can’t count Blake twice. We need another guy for the 24 class.

Does Ty Davis have an offer?

I want Davis, I worry Kon has soared too high for us though. And obviously would love to add some athleticism

Re: Blake, I find a bit of comfort in the fact that his dad was a tight end for Idaho. Good genetics for putting some meat on the bones.

Do we need a 2025 more than a 2024 in this spot? Mostly because we are likely to get a more talented big later if recruits see we already have 2 2023 guys signed … Traudt is effectively a 2023 now.

Big man - Sorber,
PG - Perry now that Freitag is off to ND or some other football powerhouse,
Wing - IDK

I really want Sorber, a guy who has the size to bang in the post and the versatility to step out and hit a 3 is so valuable. Landing Abraham and Ngongba as a package deal out of PVI seems like a long shot but that would be great as well if things turned out that way.

Would be very happy with Knueppel but it’s a similar vibe to how I felt about Momcilovic in that I have worries about how his shot and athleticism will transfer over to college.

Idk about the PG spot, Freitag getting a football offer from ND definitely complicates things. Part of me wants the staff to say screw it and go all in on Ty Davis, but another part of me knows they’ll probably identify one or two guys in the spring they like more and zero in on them instead.

I don’t think there’s a specific physical “model” we have to follow on the point guard position. We won with a taller, not exceptionally athletic (sorry Ty), cerebral type in Ty Jerome; we won with the Reece / Kihei combo at the point, we won with London Perrantes at the point. I think the key is that they have to be smart with operating the offense, good distributors, and they have to be able to shoot the three.

I think having a quick, athletic guy who can defend the point on the roster is a good idea, whether it is the starter or a reserve. We have that in Harris. Need a guy who can shoot at a high rate of accuracy to go with him at the point. Obviously if that perimeter marksman point guard is also athletic and quick all the better but I think length might be more important with Harris already on board.

Shooting guard wise, we have IMac and Gertrude for the future.

Bliss in 2023, Freitag in 2024, Ty Davis redshirted to 2025.

Grad transfer if Reece bounces to compete with Dante and Bliss for starting pg spot (and also play alongside eachother in 2pg and 3pg lineups).

High quality pgs, athletic wings who can hit an open 3, and mobile forwards who can also hit 3s.

Do we think actually get any of our current targets? I don’t mean that in a negative way, but TB doesn’t seem all in on any of these guys (yet) and I think Kon and Freitag get too big for UVA soon

Usually our first batch of targets are 5 stars UVA never has a chance with anyways. This year’s initial batch seems different. Also at this time we had McKneely locked down and Traudt offered and relationship developed.

For 2023 Buchanan was a heavy stealth target but not offered yet and Gertrude wasn’t discovered until Vandross went to go watch 2024 Kayvaun Mulready (who committed to Providence recently).

I think staff is pushing for Kon with him having that set visit for the Duke game months ago. I they are heavily involved with Perry and Freitag. I think Tony doesn’t really care about the other offers until roster clarity comes into play and its all assistants doing work with the others.

Freitag would be awesome…but I’m with you Joe. There are so many moving parts in recruiting, and of course based on Hoo And True’s constant video vignettes shows that there are ALOT of possibilities out there. I think the guys we land atleast 50% of them will not be on our current offer list as of today 2/2/23.

Is there anything bigger than UVA if you’re from Wisconsin though?? I kid, sort of.

At this point I don’t really think of recruits in terms of getting them as much as who will they actually recruit when it gets real. There are so many variables that play into that. Roster changes, how far along players are in their recruitment, and just how sold I think coaches are on them so far.

Kon is the only definite to me.

Freitag is likely but there are scenarios where a point guard comes off the agenda, and they haven’t evaluated him a ton yet. Same kind of deal with Perry but less likely because Purdue could have him wrapped by Spring.

I don’t think they’re that sold on Abraham, and depending on how things play out a shooter seems more likely to be of interest than a player like him.

The frontcourt stuff is real messy after the redshirt decisions and Dunn being used primarily as a 4-man. Getting a Caleb Williams with our roster seems really hard. And Jarin Stevenson’s recruitment feels more like a predetermined process he’s intent to play out.

My hunch is a center ends up the frontcourt spot they seriously recruit. Patrick Ngongba could be really interesting there but I wonder about a new staff at Georgetown, his mom is a women’s coach there. The injury to Raleigh Burgess I think speeds up his recruitment. We could be a real player there, hard to tell. I expect Thomas Sorber to be hard to get, and again not heavily evaluated so I think he’s the least certain of them to recruit of the group right now.

Also I had to look up several of those names, which tells you how little I’m invested in it right now.

Is this alluding to landing a transfer or Kihei being granted eternal eligibility?

haha…Kihei for eternity. Nah…I think it’s 95% certain they’ll stay after a '24 PG but if Reece leaves and some multi-year transfer they can’t pass up is out there, they’d have to do it.

Really doubt it though. Feels a lot like this point with a 2020 point guard (Reece). Ty left and Tony refused to consider anything that would interfere with Reece. So Kihei was the only PG that next year. Little different now because transfers are all immediately eligible but still expect TB to have the same mindset.

Looking ahead, but any thoughts on Jacob Wilkins?

Jadyn Harris ‘24

(Terps Hoops Scoop: Scouting potential future Terps)

Harris has really come along over the last calendar year with his confidence and physical maturity. At 6-foot-6, Harris began his high school career as a small ball four man but has since expanded his skill set to play out on the perimeter and become a true mismatch. He’s assertive off the bounce and when he couldn’t get by his man with a crossover or hesitation, he’d used his brute strength to get where he wanted inside the arc for mid-range shots or get to the basket while creating contact. Harris is a high-energy player that is a consistent presence on the glass, defends multiple positions and has a very high ceiling as a prospect long term. Harris also holds offers from Utah State and NC State. As more programs get familiar with Harris this list will extend quickly, but it gives the Terps an advantage to establish a relationship with him beforehand.

Dont think anything will come from that. Thats an old follow.

@HoozGotNext How many point guards (or maybe the better label is “playmakers”) should we have in our rotation? Is 2 enough? And can gertrude and McKneely get to that point even if not right off the bat?

Wonder if Armaan’s decision is a factor in pursuing transfer PG’s too? Could possibly feel comfortable enough with McKneely-Franklin as a backup pairing but not McKneely-Gertrude

Not really. Would assume they recruit him. But is Isaiah still around then? He can’t stay a GA forever. And I don’t know if he’s gonna be like Kentucky good, he might.

I think they both will be. Ideally you want two PGs and a couple other guys who can create a little. I do like what they’ve done with guards lately. Everybody is either really a guard like those two or they’re small 4 candidates like Dunn and Bond. I think a “wing” player today has be exceptional like Knueppel.
