Winter Recruiting Thread

I’d split this into two issues:

  1. Should we make officiating better? Yes, I think various things the NBA is doing with grading refs and making various after-action reports public has helped them quite a bit (hasn’t stopped player whining, but that’s a separate issue). I think Bryan Kersey (Grant’s uncle) has brought some new stuff to the ACC, but it seems to be mostly opaque to the public. Eades was hired recently, too. Maybe Big 12?

  2. Should that play be called as @dave92 described? On that, I agree with 92 and not theWave. I don’t see it as punishing the defender. I see it as (a) calling it the same way we always did before modern camera and replay tech, especially given that (b) the defender is happy to get the ball out of bounds (obviously), but the reason for the swipe is often to disrupt the dribble or otherwise disrupt the play. Every swipe at the ball isn’t mean to regain possession.

Sounds like a radio station. “You’re listening to 92, The Wave”. I bet we have a wacky morning zoo crew.

True that they call it that way for 38 minutes because they’re too inept to get it right… I called at least one or two double touches per game on average

Agree. During the review in the championship game, I recall the color guy whining that, yeah, Moretti did touch the ball last, but the refs should call this according to “the spirit of the rule.” That is, that Dre “caused” the ball to go out of bounds, so it should be off him.

But where do you draw the line? Last night Dunn, for NC, “caused” the ball to go out of bounds by slamming the ball off of Gardner’s foot. But the ball was off of Gardner. Carolina ball.

@DFresh11 was right. Players should be taught to pull back their hands when someone pokes it out like that. Moretti kept reaching for the ball, ensuring that he was the last to touch it. Ball is out on him. Call it by the rule, not the spirit.

Lotta things gotta go your way to win it all. That was one of the little big things. Also those things go the way of great teams. Our team was great

Edit: in a pick up game thats proly a 10 minute argument play as well. Hahah

Hilarious - remember many an argument over that exact type of play … once I started officiating I stopped arguing it in pick up ball because I would confuse them with rulebook terminology … just left it to the principle of reaping and sowing…

a low key encouraging sign to me is watching his body language on the first 3 in the reel … the ball was a tiny bit short as it grazed the front rim on its way into the basket … it seemed he realized it as the ball was in flight and was moving to follow his shot … usually a sign of a shooter

When I make my first billion I will be sending the Fresh Coast guy to film school. He’s gonna come out of there like Roger Deakins. If we insist on recruiting WI/MN like it’s the DC area, we need better cameramen.

Great observation. Of course, in my case, following my shot would just be playing the odds…

I don’t remember seeing him take the ball the length of the court on the break like that. Can’t wait to see him in C’ville!
