Women's Basketball In-Season Thread

As a benchmark: Massey considers us the #34 team in the country (good!) and yet has us favored in only 3 ACC contests and predicts we’ll go 7-11 in conference (bad!). That tells you about the buzz saw. It’s also partly because we got a tough draw this year: our home-and-aways are against NCSU, VPI, UNC (all top 10 teams) and Duke (25). We really have to win all the 50-50ish games.

It does remind me of how the men’s ACC has been for most of my life but no longer is. Many years, “7-9” or “6-8” meant solid bubble team.

I just saw Virginia’s game vs William & Mary on Thursday is being broadcast only on FloSports… almost gave me PTSD reading that…

Pretty crazy y’all are talking about if this team has a chance to make the tournament! If this is still a conversation in February Coach Mox deserves national COTY!

I think making the tournament is a bit of a fever dream right now given the ACC. But It’s at least possible which is more than we could have said at any point in the last 3 years.

Women’s NIT is probably more realistic, but with the 2 top 50 Freshman entering next year, that team should be projected to make the tournament.

If we make the Women’s NIT this year it would be an EXPONENTIAL improvement compared to last season.

As others in this thread have said I do think we are going to have a coming down to earth moment (the acc womens bball is the opposite of ACC men’s bball) and we will probably be blown out once or twice or several times. But I am already blown away by the performance and by the culture change.

Yeah, I just saw that after I tried to go to the ESPN app to watch and didn’t see it. Darn it. I think the CAA has a deal with that terrible outfit. Would hate it if my team was in that conference. JMU did the right thing going to the Sun Belt for multiple reasons.

Mir McLean with 18 and 13 at halftime. Up 46-25.

Watching the scores as I put the kids to bed looks like the hoos are up 18-20 going into the 4th. Not bad

I was gonna listen on the radio but forgot until midway through the fourth. Did anyone listen (or even watch on Flo) and have any details?

Wasn’t able to listen or watch just saw the scores and seemed like they never trailed and just poured it on

What jumps out from the box score is Mir McLean with the 22 & 17 double double. She grabs everything. She also had 9 offensive rebounds while W&M as a team had only 8 lol.

It seems her FT% is improving too… saw it jumped like 15%… woohoo!

I may be behind the power curve here, but I peeked at the women’s NET rankings just to see where UVa stood and noticed their metrics seem different… doesn’t look like it looks at quadrants, just home, away, neutral and whether the opponent is considered DIV1…

Interesting information

I think the NET is calculated similarly, but the selection committee for the women’s tournament just doesn’t use quadrants as a way to organize and sort teams based on their NET ranking.

The men’s selection committee doesn’t consider NET ranking directly, I believe, they look at wins-losses by opponent NET quadrant, but the women’s committee does consider NET ranking as one of several factors: https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2020/5/4/division-i-women-s-basketball-ncaa-evaluation-tool-net-faqs.aspx
